In a recent high-level meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad delved into the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. A video released by the Kremlin highlighted Putin's inquiry into Assad’s perspectives on regional turmoil. "Unfortunately, there is a tendency toward escalation, we can see that. This also applies directly to Syria," Putin was quoted as saying.
Assad, reflecting on the challenges faced by both nations, emphasized the significance of their meeting against the backdrop of global and Eurasian events. "Considering all the events that are taking place in the world as a whole and in the Eurasian region today, our meeting today seems very important," Assad remarked through a Russian translator.
The Kremlin, which confirmed the meeting took place on Wednesday, did not disclose specific details. However, a key topic could be the potential restoration of relations between Syria and Turkey. Relations between Damascus and Ankara have been strained since 2011, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan supported opposition forces against Assad.
Recently, Erdogan has expressed a willingness to restore ties with Syria. "Now we have come to such a point that as soon as Bashar al-Assad takes a step towards improving relations with Turkey, we will show him the same approach," Erdogan stated. A primary concern for Turkey remains the return of Syrian refugees.
Putin and Assad, long-time allies, have collaborated closely in stabilizing Syria during its prolonged civil conflict. Russian military support has been crucial in Assad’s territorial gains, and Russian bases continue to operate within Syria. The two leaders last convened in March 2023 in Moscow.
As diplomatic discussions progress, the international community watches closely to see how these potential shifts in Middle Eastern geopolitics unfold.
