Australia Backs Plan to Remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor From British Throne Line

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated support for plans to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession to the British throne, according to a letter shared by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office.

Mountbatten-Windsor, currently eighth-in-line to the throne, was arrested last week as part of a police investigation into his ties with Jeffrey Epstein. He was released from custody after being questioned over allegations of misconduct in public office, including sending confidential government documents to Epstein.

In his letter, Albanese told Starmer that Australia would back any legislative proposal to remove Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession. “I agree with His Majesty that the law must now take its full course and there must be a full, fair and proper investigation,” the letter read. “These are grave allegations and Australians take them seriously.”

King Charles, who is head of state not only in the UK but also in Australia and 13 other countries, said in a statement that the royal family fully supported the legal process. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all,” the monarch said.

The situation underscores the global reach of the monarchy, as events in the UK can have constitutional implications in countries such as Australia, which recognize the British monarch as their head of state. The proposed legislative changes would ensure Mountbatten-Windsor could never ascend to the throne, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations and the international attention the case has drawn.
