Clash in Aden: Yemeni Forces Kill 1, Injure 11 as STC Protesters Storm Presidential Palace Gate

At least one person was killed and 11 others wounded on Thursday as a crowd linked to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) attempted to storm the gate of the al-Maashiq Presidential Palace in Aden, according to Al Jazeera Arabic correspondents.

The confrontation occurred after Prime Minister Shaya Mohsen al-Zindani convened the first meeting of Yemen’s internationally recognised government at the palace. The session took place amid opposition demonstrations, reports said.

Security Response

The Aden Governorate Security Committee stated that security personnel responded in a lawful manner to armed protesters attempting to carry out “acts of sabotage” at the palace. The committee warned that any attacks on security forces or participation in chaotic acts would not be tolerated.

STC Response

The STC claimed at least 21 people were wounded and condemned what it described as the excessive use of force and live ammunition. The group demanded the creation of a committee to investigate the incident and called on the international community to intervene against what it termed “systematic repression” of the southern governorates’ population.

On Friday, the STC announced it would not recognise the legitimacy of the newly formed government, describing it as a “de facto authority” lacking political and popular support. The group asserted that the government does not represent the will of the people of southern Yemen and warned that any official government presence in Aden or the south would not carry political obligations for the South.

Background

The STC, backed by the United Arab Emirates, controlled Aden and much of southern Yemen until a Saudi Arabia-backed government offensive pushed them back in early January. Yemen has been embroiled in violence and political instability since 2014, when Houthi rebels seized large swathes of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.

Formed in 2017, the STC seeks independence and self-determination for southern Yemen, adding another layer of complexity to Yemen’s ongoing conflict.
