Deadline Driven: Sukkur Barrage Gate Replacement to Finish by June 2026

During a progress review at the historic Sukkur Barrage on Monday, Sindh’s Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro reassured the public that the vital rehabilitation work is meeting its scheduled milestones. Under the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP), a total of 44 gates are slated for replacement by June 26, 2026, at an estimated cost of Rs 17 to 18 billion. The Minister noted that the project, being executed by a Chinese firm, will extend the lifespan of the 94-year-old structure by at least 30 years. To ensure the work continues without disrupting the water supply to Sindh’s agricultural heartland, a robust coffer dam has been built between gates 15 and 22. Minister Shoro emphasized that while the province is facing severe challenges from climate change and siltation, the government is prioritizing the barrage’s efficiency, as it supports roughly 80% of Sindh’s agriculture. Following the main gate replacements, the next phase will focus on upgrading the 55 gates of the barrage's off-taking canals
