Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has revealed a significant rise in electricity consumers using less than 200 units, increasing from 9 million to 21 million.
Speaking on Geo News’ Naya Pakistan program, the minister said that many wealthy individuals now fall under this category by installing solar systems, and it is not feasible for the government to provide a 70% electricity discount to such a large segment of consumers.
Leghari highlighted a recent relief measure for the industrial sector, noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the abolition of cross-subsidies, aiming to rationalize electricity pricing.
The minister also addressed industrial electricity rates, claiming that Pakistan’s rates are now comparable to other countries in the region, and refuted claims about Bangladesh’s 6–7 cents per unit electricity rate as inaccurate.
These steps form part of the government’s broader strategy to balance subsidies, protect the poor, and make industrial energy rates competitive, while curbing misuse of preferential electricity pricing.
