The decomposed bodies of four individuals, including children, discovered in a pit along Mai Kolachi Road have revealed disturbing signs of torture, Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said on Saturday.
Police officials said the bodies — two males and two females — were found in a bushy area within the jurisdiction of the Docks police station late on Friday night. The grim discovery has sent shockwaves across the city.
Speaking to Dawn, Dr Syed said the victims were between the ages of 10 and 40 years and had been dead for approximately four to five days. The bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi, where medico-legal examinations were completed late Friday night.
According to the police surgeon, a boy aged around 13 to 14 years had sustained multiple injuries to his head, face and neck. Another boy, approximately 10 years old, had injuries to his throat. A girl between 14 and 15 years of age also bore multiple injuries to her head, face and neck, while the fourth victim — a woman believed to be around 40 years old — had serious injuries to her skull.
“All the relevant samples have been collected to test for intoxication and sexual violence,” Dr Syed said, adding that further findings would emerge after laboratory analysis.
South Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that the identities of the victims had not yet been established. He said the bodies had been moved to an Edhi morgue to facilitate identification by relatives.
DIG Raza added that no CCTV footage was available from the area where the bodies were recovered, complicating the investigation. He said a first information report (FIR) had not yet been registered, as police were awaiting relatives to come forward and claim the bodies.
“If no one approaches the police, an FIR will be registered on behalf of the state,” he said.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the injuries may have been inflicted using an axe or another sharp-edged weapon. However, the exact cause of death will be determined after the final autopsy report, the DIG said.
He further said that since three of the victims appeared to be children and the fourth an adult woman, investigators suspect they may all belong to the same family. “The gruesome killing may be linked to so-called honour killings,” he added, noting that all possibilities are being explored.
Police said investigations are ongoing and urged anyone with information about missing persons or the incident to contact law enforcement authorities.
