Iranian Officials Skip FIFA Congress Amid Canada Entry Dispute

Iranian football officials have decided not to attend the upcoming FIFA Congress in Canada following issues encountered with immigration authorities, adding a new dimension to the ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global sports.

According to reports, members of Iran’s football federation arrived in Canada with valid visas to participate in the FIFA Congress but were subjected to what Iranian sources described as “inappropriate behaviour”

by immigration officials at Toronto airport. As a result, the delegation chose to return to Iran without attending the event.

Canadian authorities, however, indicated that entry decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and noted that individuals linked to certain organizations, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),

are not permitted entry into the country.

The incident comes just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Iran’s participation in international football events has already been under scrutiny due to ongoing political tensions and regional conflict.

Analysts suggest that such incidents highlight how political and diplomatic issues are increasingly impacting global sporting events, raising concerns about participation, travel restrictions, and the spirit of international competition.

FIFA has yet to issue an official response regarding the absence of Iranian officials from the Congress.
