NAB Challenges LHC Verdict in Chaudhry Sugar Mills Case Against Maryam Nawaz

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed a petition in the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan, challenging a ruling by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case involving Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab.

In its petition, NAB argued that the Lahore High Court interfered with the legal authority of the NAB chairman to terminate an inquiry against Maryam Nawaz related to the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

According to the accountability watchdog, the case was private in nature, and the investigation did not find any evidence of corruption or corrupt practices against the Punjab chief minister. NAB also stated that no financial loss was caused to the public exchequer in the matter.

The petition further contended that the LHC misinterpreted Section 31B(1) of the NAB Amendments, which outlines the powers of the NAB chairman. NAB maintained that under the law, the chairman has full legal authority to terminate any proceedings before the filing of a formal reference.

NAB argued that the Lahore High Court exceeded its jurisdiction by making the termination of the inquiry conditional upon the approval of an Accountability Court, which the bureau said was contrary to the provisions of the law.

The accountability body has therefore requested the Federal Constitutional Court to declare the Lahore High Court’s February 4, 2026 order null and void.

The Chaudhry Sugar Mills case has been one of several investigations involving members of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) leadership over the past several years, drawing significant political and legal attention.
