Police Release Aurat March Activists After Brief Detention in Karachi

Karachi police have released several Aurat March activists after briefly detaining them outside the Karachi Press Club during a planned press conference related to the upcoming women’s rights march.

According to reports, the activists had gathered at the Karachi Press Club to address media and demand a no-objection certificate (NOC) for their annual Aurat March event. However, police intervened and detained multiple participants before the press briefing could begin.

Among those detained were well-known activists, including Sheema Kirmani and Shahzadi Rai, along with other organizers and volunteers. The activists were later released following directives from the Sindh Home Minister.

The incident triggered strong reactions from rights groups, who claimed that access to civic and democratic spaces was being restricted. Aurat March organizers also alleged that their press conference was disrupted despite being held within the premises of the press club.

Authorities, however, maintained that the action was taken due to security concerns and prevailing law and order considerations in the area.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between civil society groups and law enforcement over public demonstrations and permissions for protest-related activities in Karachi.
