Russia Launches Deadly Drone Strikes on Kyiv, Odesa; Hits Maternity Hospital

Russia launched large-scale drone attacks on Kyiv and Odesa early Tuesday, killing at least one civilian and injuring several others, in a strike that also hit a maternity hospital, intensifying an already brutal war as peace efforts continue to falter.

According to Ukrainian officials, the attacks were described as “massive,” with civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and emergency medical facilities, directly targeted.

Governor Oleg Kiper of Odesa confirmed that a 59-year-old man was killed and at least four others wounded as Russian drones rained down on the southern port city. “The Russians hit a maternity hospital, an emergency ward, and residential buildings,” Kiper wrote on Telegram, adding that the hospital had been evacuated just in time to avoid a greater tragedy.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters, warning of ongoing aerial assaults. He confirmed that at least seven districts of the capital were hit, with fires engulfing cars and residential structures.

The strikes come as part of an intensification in hostilities. On Sunday, Russia reportedly launched a record 479 explosive drones across Ukraine, targeting energy and military infrastructure. In retaliation, Ukraine has conducted strikes deep into Russian territory, including against transport hubs and weapons production sites.

Meanwhile, peace negotiations held in Turkey over the weekend failed to yield any significant breakthrough. The only agreement reached was a limited prisoner exchange for seriously ill or underage detainees, with no clarity on numbers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the Russian delegation as incapable of agreeing to a ceasefire, calling further talks “pointless.”

Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, condemned Russia’s actions, stating:

“Russia lies every day about its desire for peace and attacks people every day. Time to impose sanctions. Time to support Ukraine with weapons. Time to prove that democracy has power.”

Russia has rejected calls for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, arguing it would benefit Ukrainian rearmament. Moscow continues to demand Kyiv cede annexed territories and renounce NATO membership, terms Ukraine has described as unacceptable ultimatums.

Adding to the chaos, Russia's transport agency Rosaviatsia temporarily shut down Saint Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport and at least 13 others, with four airports in Moscow resuming operations by Tuesday morning.

The conflict, now in its third year, remains the largest war in Europe since World War II, with millions displaced, thousands killed, and entire regions decimated.
