Former Foreign Minister and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was shifted from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday after he experienced chest pain, his legal counsel confirmed.
According to Advocate Rana Mudassar, Qureshi began complaining of heart pain early in the morning following Fajr prayers. Prison medical staff assessed his condition but, with no improvement, authorities called Rescue 1122, which transported him to PIC for further evaluation and tests.
“He is undergoing several medical tests at the hospital,” Mudassar stated, adding that Qureshi's family has been informed of the development. The PTI leader’s son also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), requesting the nation to pray for his father's swift recovery.
Qureshi has been imprisoned since August 2023 and has been indicted in several cases related to the May 9, 2023 riots, which erupted across the country following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. In July 2024, Qureshi was formally indicted by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore over an attack on the Shadman police station.
He was transferred from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore later that month after authorities argued that his frequent transport between the cities for court hearings was impractical and posed logistical challenges.
In November 2024, Qureshi, along with other senior PTI leaders, was indicted in multiple cases connected to the May 9 unrest. He has consistently denied the charges and pleaded not guilty in court.
The latest health scare adds to the already complex legal and political challenges facing the PTI stalwart, whose prolonged detention has remained a focal point in the party’s criticism of the current government.
Further updates on Qureshi’s medical condition and court proceedings are awaited.
