Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez strongly condemned past wars and signaled Spain’s firm stance against external pressure after US President Donald Trump threatened to end trade relations over Spain’s refusal to provide a military base.
Speaking on Spain’s national principles, Sanchez highlighted the consequences of past mistakes, saying that in 2003, “some irresponsible leaders pushed Spain into an illegal war, which resulted in nothing but insecurity and suffering.”
He emphasized that violations of international law will not be tolerated, adding that the idea of solving global problems through military force or bombs must end. Sanchez reassured that Spain would not participate in any activity or alliance harmful to the world.
Expressing confidence in Spain’s capabilities, he underlined the country’s economic, institutional, and moral strength, and stressed that defending Spain’s principles and sovereignty remains a top priority.
The statement comes amid mounting tension between Spain and the US, following Trump’s attempt to pressure Spain for military cooperation. Sanchez’s remarks make it clear that Spain will prioritize its national interests and uphold international norms.
