The Spain government has officially decided to withdraw its ambassador to Israel, according to a notification published in the official state gazette.
The move, announced on Wednesday, comes amid growing tensions in the Middle East, as Spain has emerged as one of the European Union’s most vocal critics of Israel’s operations in Gaza and the new war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
According to the gazette:
"At the proposal of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, and following deliberation by the Council of Ministers at its meeting on 10 March 2026, I hereby order the termination of Ms Ana María Sálomon Pérez’s appointment as Ambassador of Spain to the State of Israel."
The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will now be managed by a charge d’affaires, a source at the Foreign Ministry told Reuters.
Government Stance on Middle East Conflicts
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has consistently condemned the US-Israel strikes on Iran as “unjustifiable” and reiterated Madrid’s position of “no to the war.” Sanchez’s administration has also been a leading voice in Europe condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
In October 2025, the Spanish parliament passed a law permanently banning the sale of arms, dual-use technology, and military equipment to Israel, enshrining a total arms embargo in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Analysts say Spain’s decision to withdraw its ambassador is a continuation of its principled diplomatic stance and sends a strong political signal to both Israel and the EU regarding its position on military escalation in the region.
