A judicial magistrate on Monday granted bail to five suspects in the tragic death of a mother and her 10-month-old daughter who fell into an open manhole near Bhati Gate last month. The bail was granted after the complainant chose not to pursue legal action.
The victims, 24-year-old Sadia and her daughter Rida, fell into the sewer at the under-construction Data Darbar expansion project on January 28. Sadia’s body was recovered the same night, while her daughter’s body was found the next day.
The five suspects presented in court included Project Manager Asghar Sandhu, CEO Salman Yasin, Site Incharge Hunzala, Ahmed Nawaz, and Daniyal. Three officials of the contractor working on the project were initially arrested along with two others.
The complainant, Murtaza, Sadia’s husband, along with her father Sajid Hussain, informed the court that they did not wish to continue legal proceedings. Based on this, Magistrate Shafqat Abbas approved bail and directed the suspects to furnish Rs50,000 surety bonds each.
At a previous hearing, the defence counsel had stated that the company owner voluntarily surrendered and presented a Rs10 million cheque to the family as compensation.
