Elon Musk Calls Himself a “Fool” for Funding OpenAI During Court Testimony

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has told a US court that he considers himself a “fool” for financially supporting the early development of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

During testimony in an ongoing lawsuit in California, Musk said he continued funding OpenAI after receiving assurances from CEO Sam Altman that the organization would remain a nonprofit focused on advancing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

However, Musk claimed he later felt betrayed when OpenAI shifted toward a for-profit structure and formed commercial partnerships, including major investments from Microsoft. He argued that the company abandoned its original mission and prioritized profit over public benefit.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and contributed around $38 million in early funding, is now seeking legal action against the company, its leadership, and associated partners. He alleges that the organization deviated from its founding agreement and misused its nonprofit status.

OpenAI has rejected the claims, arguing that there was no binding promise to remain a nonprofit indefinitely and that Musk himself had previously supported discussions about alternative corporate structures.

The trial, which is being closely watched across the tech industry, is expected to continue for several weeks and could have major implications for the future governance of artificial intelligence companies.
