Gulf Tensions Escalate as Israel Strikes Iran’s South Pars Gas Field

The Gulf has been thrown into a state of heightened tension after Israel launched an attack on Iran’s strategic South Pars gas field, one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves shared with Qatar.

Donald Trump warned that if Iran continues attacks on Qatar, the United States is prepared to destroy the South Pars gas field “with full force,” even without Israeli involvement. Trump emphasized that the US had no prior knowledge of Israel’s strike and stressed that Qatar was not implicated in the attack.

According to reports, Iran responded by launching missile attacks on Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Qatar Energy, the state-owned energy company, reported extensive damage and severe fires at LNG facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City, which processes roughly 20% of the world’s gas. Saudi authorities said four ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh were destroyed, and a drone attack on an eastern gas facility was successfully thwarted.

The strikes have caused global energy prices to surge, reflecting concerns over disruptions in one of the world’s key natural gas regions. Trump described the Israeli operation as a “dangerous escalation” but indicated that further attacks by Israel would not occur if Iran refrains from retaliation.

South Pars remains a critical energy hub. The Iranian portion, shared with Qatar, represents a major part of the world’s gas reserves. Qatar, a close US ally hosting the largest American military base in the Gulf, has been directly affected by the conflict. The attacks threaten to disrupt global energy supplies and raise geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.

The situation underscores the fragility of energy security in the Gulf and the potential for further escalation between Iran, Israel, and their regional allies.
