Two officials were martyred and two others injured when militants launched a coordinated attack on Yarik police station and a nearby customs office in Dera Ismail Khan on Wednesday, police confirmed.
According to officials, the attackers used automatic weapons to target the police station and the customs facility situated along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) route. The sudden assault triggered panic in the area, particularly among commuters traveling along the busy corridor.
A police spokesperson identified the martyred officials as customs official Israr Khan and police constable Mohammad Bilal. Both lost their lives in the line of duty while responding to the attack.
The injured personnel, Hazrat Umar and Khayal Mohammad, were immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital’s trauma centre, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
During the assault, militants also opened fire on passenger buses moving along the CPEC route, spreading fear among travelers. A customs vehicle was set on fire in the attack, causing further damage to government property.
Security forces promptly retaliated, engaging the assailants in a gun battle. The attackers fled the scene following the exchange of fire. A heavy police contingent later reached the area and cordoned off the site. Authorities have launched a search operation in surrounding localities to track down those responsible.
Investigations into the incident are underway, with officials vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The latest attack adds to a troubling wave of violence in Dera Ismail Khan. Earlier this month, four policemen, including a station house officer (SHO), were martyred in an armed assault on a police party in the Paniala’s Wanda Budh area.
On January 24, five people, including a local peace committee leader, were killed and 10 others injured in what officials described as a suicide explosion during a wedding ceremony in the district.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining security in the region amid rising militant activity.
