Monsoon 2026: PMD Forecasts Widespread Rains Across Pakistan Starting July 1; Urban Flooding and Landslide Warnings Issued
Detailed Report
-
The Monsoon Onset: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a comprehensive national advisory forecasting the first major wave of widespread monsoon rainfall across the country, spanning July 1 to July 6, 2026. The weather shift is driven by a dual system: a westerly weather system entering the upper regions on June 30, coupled with moist, high-pressure winds surging from the Arabian Sea into central Pakistan and humid air currents from the Bay of Bengal reaching upper Pakistan by July 2.
-
Severe Weather & Urban Flooding Red Flags: The Met Office has issued critical safety warnings for urban centers. Heavy downpours are expected to trigger flash urban flooding in low-lying residential and commercial zones of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Nowshera, and Faisalabad between July 1 and July 4. Municipal authorities in these districts have been advised to clear major drainage bottlenecks immediately.
-
Provincial Breakdown and the Karachi Exception: While Punjab and Kashmir bear the brunt of the 6-day rain cycle, the system will taper as it moves southwest. Northern and northeastern Balochistan will experience thunderstorms from July 1 to July 4. In Sindh, the monsoon currents will bring relief and rain to upper districts like Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana on July 3 and 4. Notably, the PMD confirmed that Karachi is currently excluded from this rain forecast, with coastal winds keeping the system inland.
