POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice has approved the Evidence Amendment Bill, while deliberations on the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Bill and amendments to Article 25 have been postponed.
The meeting, chaired by Mahmood Bashir Work, saw committee members raise concerns over the powers and transparency granted to judges under the ADR Bill. The Minister of State advocated for a conciliation process, prompting further discussion on balancing judicial authority and public accountability.
Amendments were also made to Articles 69, 61, and 84 of the Evidence Bill, with the definition of a forensic expert receiving particular attention. Regarding the proposed amendment to Article 25, the committee noted that the constitution’s wording is already clear, and further amendments were deemed unnecessary.
Members were briefed on the establishment of a Legal Facilitation Center near the Islamabad High Court and highlighted funding shortfalls for judicial projects. Concerns were raised about delays in project completion and limited availability of resources necessary for effective implementation.
The approval of the Evidence Amendment Bill is expected to enhance the procedural clarity of the legal framework, while discussions on the ADR and Article 25 amendments will continue in future sessions.
