Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the “Apna Ghar Programme”, under which the government will provide housing loans of up to Rs10 million to eligible citizens on easy installment plans.
The initiative is part of a broader housing development plan worth Rs3.2 trillion, aimed at addressing Pakistan’s growing housing shortage and making home ownership more accessible for low and middle-income families.
According to official details, the programme will facilitate the construction of around 500,000 housing units across Pakistan, including all provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Under the scheme, loans will be repayable over a period of 20 years, with a subsidized markup of 5% for the first 10 years, after which market-based rates will apply for the remaining tenure.
In the first phase, the government has set a target to finance 50,000 houses, with an allocation of approximately Rs321 billion. The programme is designed for houses up to 10 marla or apartments up to 2,000 sq. ft., depending on eligibility criteria.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the initiative is aimed at providing relief to citizens struggling with rising rent and housing costs. He also announced that the implementation process will be closely monitored on a monthly basis to ensure transparency and timely progress.
Officials stated that the scheme will be executed through financial institutions in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan, ensuring fair access and smooth loan disbursement procedures.
The programme is being seen as a major step toward expanding affordable housing finance in Pakistan and addressing long-standing urban housing shortages.
