PTI Criticises PM Shehbaz for Joining Board of Peace Without Consultation

The PTI on Friday criticised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for attending the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, reiterating its objection to Pakistan joining the board without proper consultation or parliamentary debate.

The Board of Peace, formally established last month after being proposed in September 2025 to oversee peace efforts in Gaza, held its inaugural session on February 19, attended by PM Shehbaz and several other world leaders.

In a statement posted on X, PTI expressed “grave concern over the government of Pakistan’s decision to join the Board of Peace without transparency, parliamentary debate, or consultation with major political stakeholders of the country.” The party stressed that decisions of such international significance must adhere to constitutional procedure, democratic oversight, and national consensus.

Critique of Government Process

PTI maintained that it does not recognise the legitimacy of the current Parliament, elected in what it described as the “manipulated 2024 elections.” Nevertheless, the party said, “even this Parliament was bypassed in this decision-making process, further eroding democratic norms and public trust.”

The party contrasted PM Shehbaz’s position with that of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, noting that Khan has consistently been a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights on the global stage. PTI reiterated its support for a just and lasting resolution through an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in line with international law and longstanding party policy.

Concerns About Palestinian Exclusion

PTI questioned the credibility of the Board of Peace, highlighting that Palestinians remain excluded while Israel continues to participate, even as violence persists in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. “A peace mechanism without Palestinian representation can only be termed as control,” the statement said.

The party strongly criticised PM Shehbaz for making statements that it said compromised Pakistan’s dignity, independent foreign policy, and historically principled stance on oppressed peoples.

Government Defence

The government has defended joining the Board of Peace, stating that Pakistan’s participation followed approval from the federal cabinet. PM Shehbaz previously argued that the country’s engagement reflects its commitment to international peace initiatives.

Despite government assurances, PTI stressed that Pakistan’s role in global peace efforts must strengthen the United Nations framework rather than promote parallel arrangements that exclude the very people under occupation.

The statement concluded by reaffirming PTI’s position that any peace initiative must respect justice, self-determination, and Palestinian representation to be credible.
