The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday raised objections to a petition seeking the transfer of Imran Khan to a hospital for specialized eye treatment.
The application, filed on February 25 by senior PTI lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa under Order XXXV Rule 6 of the Supreme Court Rules 2025, requested that the incarcerated former prime minister be shifted to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for treatment by a retina specialist.
Appearing before Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, Khosa and PTI lawyer Naeem Panjotha sought an early hearing of the plea. However, the chief justice informed them that the application had been returned with objections a day earlier and, therefore, no proceedings could be conducted.
“Your petitions will remain pending until further orders,” the CJP remarked, clarifying that there was currently no valid application before the court for consideration.
Khosa argued that the request was made on humanitarian grounds, citing concerns over Imran Khan’s health following his diagnosis with right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). The former premier, currently imprisoned at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, underwent a follow-up check-up at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on February 24.
However, Chief Justice Afridi emphasized that the court had not issued any prior directive regarding medical treatment and that the government had facilitated the check-up independently. He further noted that the matter of health was not pending before the apex court.
According to sources, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan also met the CJP and urged the transfer of the party founder to a hospital, citing concerns raised by his family and party. He was reportedly informed that the Supreme Court would not intervene while related cases remain pending before the Islamabad High Court.
The plea additionally sought access for Imran Khan’s personal physicians, including Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Aasim Yusuf, to oversee his examination and treatment.
Imran Khan, 73, has been in custody since August 2023 in connection with multiple cases, including the Toshakhana reference. His recent health condition has drawn attention, with PTI leaders expressing reservations over what they described as secrecy surrounding his medical examination.
For now, the Supreme Court has directed the petitioner to address procedural objections through the registrar’s office before any further hearing can take place.
