Ukraine Signs Defense Cooperation Deals with UAE and Qatar Amid Regional Tensions

Ukraine has formalized defense cooperation agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited both countries amid rising regional tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran.

In Qatar, the defence ministry announced that Doha and Kyiv had signed a defense cooperation agreement, which includes the exchange of expertise in countering missiles and unmanned aerial systems.

Earlier, Zelenskiy visited the United Arab Emirates and met President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in security and defense. Zelenskiy stated on the Telegram app that “our teams will finalise the details,” referring to ongoing discussions.

Ukraine has accumulated significant experience in intercepting Russian drones and missiles during years of conflict, and is leveraging this expertise to bolster Gulf states’ defenses against potential Iranian drone and missile attacks, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

The agreements come amid heightened regional instability, including Iranian retaliatory strikes that have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and targeted multiple countries in the Gulf. The broader US-Israeli conflict with Iran has killed over 2,000 people and rattled global markets.

Zelenskiy had also visited Saudi Arabia on Thursday, where the two nations signed a separate defense cooperation agreement. These agreements signal Kyiv’s growing diplomatic and security role in the Gulf as regional powers seek to mitigate the fallout from the ongoing conflict in Iran.
