The United States has carried out extensive military strikes on Iran in a coordinated operation with the Israeli military, US Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth confirmed during a press briefing in Washington on Monday. The attacks began at 9:45 p.m. on February 28 and targeted various Iranian military installations.
Secretary Hegseth acknowledged that achieving full military objectives will take time and warned that additional casualties should be expected. “This is not an easy step,” he said, emphasizing that the US remains committed to protecting its national interests while avoiding unwise actions.
Scope of the Operation
All branches of the US military participated, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and Reserve components. About 100 aircraft were deployed in the first phase of the operation, striking targets from both sea and land.
According to US officials, approximately 1,000 targets have been hit over the first 57 hours of the operation. Targets include:
- Iran’s command and control systems
- Military infrastructure
- Ballistic missile sites
- Intelligence infrastructure
General Dean Keene, speaking at the same conference, claimed that local air superiority has been achieved, which will ensure the safety of US forces and enable continued operations inside Iran. He did not provide further details on the full extent of air control or future actions.
US Strategic Position
Defense officials stressed that Iran’s nuclear and missile programs are considered military threats, not peaceful endeavors. The Pentagon stated that Iran has focused on developing bombs and missiles, including underground facilities, despite repeated US offers of diplomatic agreements.
Hegseth added that the United States possesses the capability to destroy Iran’s navy and critical infrastructure, and warned that if Iran resumes hostile activities, additional strikes will follow. “The United States will set the rules of this war and make decisions from beginning to end,” officials said, underscoring that peace may ultimately be established through force if necessary.
At this stage, no US ground forces have been deployed in Iran, though officials declined to rule out possible future steps. Secretary Hegseth emphasized that public disclosure of future operations would be strategically unwise.
Regional and Global Implications
The strikes represent the most significant US-Israel coordinated military operation against Iran in decades and are likely to have wide-ranging implications for Middle East security. Analysts warn that escalating military activity could lead to further regional instability, while officials maintain that decisive action is necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and threatening US allies.
