Abbas Araghchi Discusses Conditions for US Talks with ‘Friends in Pakistan

Abbas Araghchi has said that Iran held detailed consultations with Pakistan regarding the future of its dialogue with the United States, outlining the possible path and conditions for continuing negotiations.

Speaking after a series of regional visits, Araghchi described his trips to Islamabad and Muscat as focused on strengthening bilateral ties and reviewing recent developments. He noted that Pakistan has recently played a key role in facilitating communication between Tehran and Washington, making it an important partner for consultations.

The Iranian minister said that while there had been some progress in earlier discussions, talks failed to reach a conclusion due to what he described as unrealistic demands and approaches from the US side. As a result, Tehran felt it necessary to reassess the situation and engage with Pakistani officials on how negotiations could move forward.

Araghchi termed his visit to Pakistan successful, saying both sides reviewed past developments and explored the framework under which dialogue with Washington could resume.

During his stop in Oman, he emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, particularly regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted the need for close coordination between Iran and Oman to ensure safe maritime transit, calling it a matter of global importance.

The foreign minister later arrived in Saint Petersburg, where he is expected to hold discussions with Vladimir Putin as part of ongoing coordination on regional and international issues.

Recent diplomatic efforts to revive talks between Iran and the US have faced uncertainty, especially after a planned visit by American envoys to Islamabad was cancelled. Despite this, mediation efforts continue, with Pakistan playing a central role in relaying messages between both sides.

Reports suggest Iran has shared its key conditions through diplomatic channels, including issues related to its nuclear programme and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the ongoing ceasefire in the conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel remains fragile, with broader economic impacts being felt globally due to disruptions in energy supplies.

Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s priority remains protecting its national interests while continuing diplomatic engagement with regional partners.
