POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, clarified on Monday that PTI did not prohibit Basant celebrations in Lahore.
Speaking to media outside the Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi, Aleema said, “We did not tell anyone not to celebrate Basant. I have also flown kites at home, and my son went to celebrate Basant with his children on February 6.”
She emphasized the cultural significance of the festival, adding, “Who can stop Lahoreis from celebrating Basant? Seeing their passion, every child was flying kites. My elder son is fond of Basant. This is not the Basant of any party.”
Aleema also commented on the PTI’s recent protest, describing it as “very strong”. She said, “People voted silently and protested silently. Earlier, they were told to sit at home, but now they say, ‘Come out.’ Those who were supposed to protest by closing shops did so, and those who were not supposed to protest did not. Yesterday’s protest was successful. Call it what you will.”
Regarding legal proceedings, Aleema noted that cases from the last two years had accumulated in the Supreme Court, and a 3-member bench has been formed to hear appeals, marking a significant development in ongoing legal matters involving the party.
