The federal government is considering a targeted subsidy on petrol for motorcycle and three-wheeler owners as part of its broader efforts to ease the financial burden on lower-income segments amid rising fuel costs.
According to reports, the proposed plan includes providing a monthly subsidy covering 20 to 30 litres of petrol to eligible consumers. To ensure transparency and targeted distribution, authorities are expected to introduce a QR code-based system for accessing subsidised fuel.
An official announcement regarding the initiative is expected in the coming days.
Sources indicate that the government has also approached provincial administrations to contribute approximately Rs154 billion to support the implementation of the proposed austerity and relief measures.
The development was discussed during a high-level consultative meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Officials briefed the meeting that the country currently has sufficient fuel reserves, with supplies expected to last until May 10.
The proposed subsidy comes at a time when the government is weighing adjustments to petroleum prices in response to global market fluctuations and regional geopolitical tensions impacting oil supply.
A final decision on fuel prices is expected next week following a key meeting involving President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the chief ministers of all four provinces.
The targeted relief plan reflects the government’s strategy to balance fiscal discipline with public support, particularly for those most affected by inflation and rising transportation costs.
If approved, the initiative could provide significant relief to millions of daily commuters and small-scale transport operators who rely heavily on motorcycles and rickshaws for their livelihoods.
