Nationwide Pakistan Protests Over US Israel Strikes on Iran; Roads Shut in Karachi, Islamabad

Roads in multiple cities across Pakistan, including Karachi and Islamabad, were closed for several hours on Friday as nationwide protests erupted following US-Israeli attacks on Iran and the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

In Islamabad, the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) and the Ittehad-i-Ummat Forum — comprising the Shia Ulema Council, MWM, and Tehreek-i-Bedari — held rallies after Friday prayers, marching from an imambargah in sector G-6/2. The protest aimed to proceed towards D-Chowk but ended near Poly Clinic Hospital.

MWM Vice Chairman Allama Ahmed Iqbal Rizvi criticised the US and Israel, holding them responsible for global conflicts and demanding Pakistan withdraw from the Trump-led “Board of Peace,” alleging it facilitates Israel’s “nefarious designs.” Rizvi also condemned security authorities over last week’s deadly protests, in which 11 people were killed and dozens injured during demonstrations, including those outside the US Consulate in Karachi. Fatalities were also reported in Islamabad, Skardu, and Gilgit.

Shia Ulema Council Vice President Allama Arif Wahidi called for unity against the US and Israel, citing the killings in Gaza.

In Karachi, the religious group Dukhtar-i-Rehbar organized a march from Imambargah Mehfil-i-Shah-i-Khorasan to Imambargah Ali Raza on M.A Jinnah Road. Following the protests, M.A Jinnah Road and key sections of the National Highway along Gulshan Hadid Mor were reopened for traffic later in the day.

Traffic authorities implemented extensive diversions across both cities. In Islamabad, Margalla Road and the route via Islamabad Marriott Hotel remained open, while other entry points to the Red Zone were closed. Commuters were directed to alternate routes, including Jinnah Avenue, Saddar Road, and the China Chowk underpass.

The protests reflect growing public anger in Pakistan over the US-Israeli military actions and demonstrate widespread solidarity with Iran amid recent regional tensions. Authorities emphasized the need for peaceful demonstrations while ensuring minimal disruption to city traffic.
