POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal on Monday emphasized that Pakistan prioritizes its sovereignty and national security above all in dealings with Afghanistan. While welcoming discussions to promote bilateral trade, the minister underlined that progress on economic cooperation is conditional on Afghanistan addressing the presence of terrorist safe havens on its soil.
“We have made it clear at every level that Pakistan gives its sovereignty and security the highest priority,” Jam Kamal stated. He warned that Pakistan cannot move forward with any talks on trade or other subjects until Afghan authorities take concrete action against militants operating within their borders.
The minister added, “Afghanistan will have to deal with terrorists using its soil. No compromise can be made on Pakistan’s security.” His remarks highlight Islamabad’s insistence that counterterrorism measures remain a prerequisite for advancing bilateral relations, including trade and economic collaboration.
The statement comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize regional trade routes and enhance economic cooperation between the two neighbors, while addressing persistent security concerns along the shared border.
