PPP Calls Petrol Price Hike “Petrol Bomb” Ahead of Ramazan

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) strongly criticized the federal government on Monday over the latest increase in petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices, terming the move a “petrol bomb” dropped on the public at a time of rising financial hardship.

PPP central spokesperson Shazia Marri condemned the decision, highlighting the timing of the hike just days before the holy month of Ramazan. Petrol prices were increased by Rs5 per litre, bringing the ex-depot price to Rs258.17, while HSD prices rose by Rs7.32 per litre to Rs275.70. The government said the new rates will remain in effect until the end of February, citing fluctuations in international oil markets.

Marri, in a statement on the PPP website, described the increase as “unjust and ill-advised” and “highly unfair,” particularly given the ongoing record inflation affecting ordinary citizens. She warned that the hike would disproportionately impact the poor, laborers, and middle class, further driving up food and transportation costs.

“The government should have focused on providing relief to inflation-hit citizens instead of imposing additional financial burdens,” Marri said, calling attention to the contradiction in government policy. While announcing a Ramazan relief package, the administration simultaneously fuels inflation through petrol and diesel price hikes, she argued.

Marri urged the federal government to immediately review and withdraw the increase, emphasizing that policymakers should prioritize tackling unemployment, inflation, and the ongoing economic crisis rather than taking steps that worsen public hardship.

The PPP’s criticism underscores growing public frustration over rising fuel costs, especially as families prepare for Ramazan amid an already challenging economic environment.
