Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged Turkiye’s constructive role in promoting peace efforts between Pakistan and Afghanistan during a telephone call with Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday.
The discussion came after Pakistan announced a temporary pause in its Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against the Afghan Taliban for Eidul Fitr, following requests from Turkiye and other Islamic countries. The prime minister praised Turkiye’s contribution to the recently announced ceasefire during the Eid days and reiterated Pakistan’s strong condemnation of regional escalations, particularly the missile attacks on Turkiye.
According to a statement from the PM Office, both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy and urged the international community to actively seek resolutions to regional conflicts. PM Shehbaz also highlighted the close bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Turkiye, recalling Erdogan’s visit to Pakistan in February 2025 and his own visits to Turkiye in April and May 2025.
The prime minister extended Eidul Fitr greetings to President Erdogan, his family, and the people of Turkiye, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast solidarity with Turkiye and other Gulf countries. On X, PM Shehbaz said, “I reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast solidarity with Turkiye as well as with other brotherly Gulf countries, and conveyed our readiness to support efforts aimed at de-escalation and dialogue.”
The conversation also included discussions on Afghanistan, with PM Shehbaz acknowledging Turkiye’s constructive support for peace, particularly its role in facilitating the temporary ceasefire. Both leaders agreed to maintain close engagement to promote peace, prosperity, and economic growth both bilaterally and across the region.
