Sindh Bar Council Demands Immediate Removal of Governor Kamran Tessori Over Political Activities

The Sindh Bar Council has called for the immediate removal of Kamran Tessori as Governor of Sindh, urging President Asif Ali Zardari to act, after alleging that political activities at the Governor House violated the Constitution.

During the 109th meeting of the council on February 21, members passed a resolution stating that Tessori’s involvement in political activities and use of the Governor House for partisan purposes breached constitutional requirements. The resolution declared that Tessori “has proved himself unfit for representing the federation” and called for his immediate removal.

The council emphasised that constitutional positions must remain apolitical and impartial, serving as representatives of the federation. It further underscored that the unity and integrity of Sindh cannot be compromised under any political arrangement. The resolution also sought clarity from the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians regarding its stance on federal power-sharing with parties allegedly promoting divisive narratives in Sindh.

The controversy follows accusations by Sindhi nationalist leaders that the Governor House had become a platform for ethnic politics. On February 20, Ayaz Latif Palijo of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek criticised Tessori for turning the Governor House into a “centre for hatching conspiracies against Sindh and Pakistan.”

Senior Minister and Minister for Information Sharjeel Inam Memon also condemned what he described as linguistically and politically biased speeches delivered at a recent event at the Governor House, noting that such rhetoric undermines civic harmony and is inappropriate for a constitutional platform. He expressed concern that elected representatives were using the Governor House to deliver partisan messages, particularly targeting MQM-P members, threatening Karachi’s culture of peace and brotherhood.

The Sindh Bar Council highlighted that even absent members endorsed the resolution, signalling widespread concern within the legal community about the politicisation of constitutional offices.

The council has urged President Zardari to ensure that constitutional protections are upheld and that the Governor’s office remains neutral and above partisan politics.
