POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the return of Rs70 million to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, marking the final administrative conclusion of the long-standing Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.
A three-member bench, presided over by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, issued the order after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) submitted a formal affidavit confirming they had withdrawn all proceedings in the matter. The court’s decision follows a recent announcement by NAB that they no longer intended to pursue the case, rendering the previous bail conditions—and the associated guarantee money—unnecessary.
Key Highlights of the Ruling
-
The Refund: The Rs70 million, which had been deposited with the court registrar as a condition for Maryam Nawaz's post-arrest bail in November 2019, will now be returned to her representative (Captain Safdar Awan).
-
Case Termination: This ruling comes shortly after a separate LHC bench disposed of NAB’s petition to cancel her bail, noting that since the Chief Minister has been acquitted in the primary reference, the case is officially "infructuous."
-
Legal Timeline: This concludes a legal saga that began with her arrest in August 2019. Over the years, the court has systematically removed her bail restrictions, including the return of her passport in late 2022
