Wang Yi backs Pakistan’s mediation role in Iran conflict during call with Ishaq Dar

Wang Yi has expressed support for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to mediate in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, stating that initiating peace talks remains a complex but necessary step toward regional stability.

During a phone call with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday, the Chinese foreign minister emphasised that dialogue would be crucial in restoring normal navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement released by China’s foreign ministry, both sides agreed to jointly promote a ceasefire, cessation of hostilities, and the resumption of peace talks. They also underscored the importance of protecting non-military targets and ensuring the safety of international waterways.

Wang Yi reiterated Beijing’s support for Islamabad’s role as a mediator, acknowledging Pakistan’s growing diplomatic engagement in efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ishaq Dar confirmed that both countries had reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond.

“We agreed to support all efforts aimed at ensuring an immediate end to hostilities, resumption of peace talks, protection of non-combatants, security of shipping lanes, and adherence to the United Nations Charter,” Dar stated.

He further noted that China appreciated Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives and pledged continued cooperation in resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means.

Pakistan’s expanding diplomatic role

The development comes as Pakistan continues to play a central role in facilitating indirect communication between the United States and Iran. These efforts are being carried out in coordination with Turkiye and Egypt.

Officials have confirmed that indirect exchanges between Washington and Tehran are ongoing through structured message relays rather than direct negotiations.

Earlier this week, Dar revealed that a 15-point framework proposed by the United States had been shared with Iran and is currently under consideration, with regional partners supporting the diplomatic initiative.

China has consistently endorsed Pakistan’s role in promoting de-escalation. In an earlier conversation on March 10, Wang Yi had commended Islamabad’s constructive approach toward maintaining stability in the Middle East.

As tensions persist, coordinated diplomatic efforts involving key regional and global players continue to focus on preventing further escalation and ensuring the safety of critical global trade routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz.
