Judicial Commission to Inspect Gul Plaza Tragedy Site, Families Summoned

The judicial commission formed to investigate the Gul Plaza tragedy on MA Jinnah Road will visit the site on February 14, officials confirmed. The commission, headed by Justice Agha Faisal, will inspect the building, assess current conditions, and review rescue and search operations carried out during the fire.

Following the site inspection, the commission will issue notices and summon relevant agencies, including the Fire Brigade, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), and rescue services, for further investigation.

In a significant step forward in the inquiry, Justice Faisal has also summoned the families of the 79 victims who died in the tragedy. The families have been directed to appear on February 16 at the office of the Deputy Commissioner South, where their statements will be recorded. Summons notices have been delivered to homes of the victims’ heirs.

The fire at Gul Plaza, which occurred on the night of January 17 at 10:15 pm, claimed 79 lives and left 12 seriously injured. The blaze was so severe that many victims could only be identified through DNA testing.

Following the tragedy, the Sindh government formed an investigation committee headed by the Commissioner Karachi and Additional IG Karachi, and a cabinet committee led by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was also established. On January 29, the Sindh government requested the Sindh High Court Chief Justice to form a judicial commission to conduct a formal judicial inquiry. Justice Agha Faisal was appointed head of the commission on February 4.

The commission is expected to submit its report to the Sindh government, which will help determine accountability and guide decisions regarding those responsible for the tragedy.
