Law Minister Says Imran Khan’s Eye Procedure Successful, Denies Negligence

Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazir Tarar informed the Senate on Tuesday that the eye procedure of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was successfully carried out and that his health condition is satisfactory, rejecting allegations of negligence in his medical care.

Responding to concerns raised by opposition members during the Senate session, the law minister said that Imran Khan’s eye treatment could have been conducted at the Adiala Jail Hospital. However, he added that the former prime minister himself requested to be shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital for the procedure.

“The eye disease that Imran Khan has does not require surgery but injections,” Senator Tarar told the House. “The procedure was successful and there are no further complications.”

Earlier, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, criticised the authorities for allegedly failing to inform Imran Khan’s family about his illness. He questioned why the PTI founder was being deprived of his rights as a citizen and as a prisoner.

“A crime was committed by not informing his family,” Abbas said, warning that Imran Khan’s eye could be at risk and demanding that he be examined by a doctor of his own choice. “Why is there negligence in such a serious matter?” he asked.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar also expressed reservations over the medical assessment, saying that party-appointed experts were not satisfied with the report issued by PIMS Hospital. He urged that two independent medical experts be allowed to examine Imran Khan and called on the Senate to direct PIMS to release the medical report so it could be made public.

In response, Senator Tarar reiterated that Imran Khan’s health was stable and dismissed claims of concealment or denial of treatment. He said the PTI founder himself had suggested being taken to PIMS in the evening, citing possible law and order concerns.

Drawing a comparison with a past case, the law minister recalled the arrest of Rana Sanaullah, stating that when Sanaullah was taken into custody, he was on his way to a hospital but was placed in judicial custody by a magistrate and allegedly denied access to a jail doctor on the instructions of the then prime minister.

“The prime minister has never said that Imran Khan should be denied medical treatment or access to doctors,” Tarar said, adding that the current government upholds human rights and ensures medical care for prisoners.

The debate highlighted ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition over the treatment and legal rights of the jailed PTI founder, with opposition lawmakers continuing to demand greater transparency regarding his health.
