POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Shehbaz Sharif on Monday held a telephone conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation in the Middle East amid intensifying regional conflict.
The call comes as the ongoing Middle East war 2026 entered its fourth week. The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, a development that significantly escalated tensions across the region.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed “serious concern” over what he described as dangerous and escalating hostilities in the Gulf region. He stressed the importance of collective efforts among regional countries to ease tensions and return to dialogue and diplomacy.
“In view of this grave situation, there is an urgent need to work collectively for de-escalation and peaceful resolution of differences,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) quoted him as saying.
The premier also highlighted the importance of unity within the Muslim world, noting that solidarity among the Ummah was more critical than ever in the face of current challenges.
Sharing Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach efforts, the prime minister assured the Iranian leadership that Islamabad would continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
As a neighbouring country, Pakistan also expressed solidarity with Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz conveyed condolences over the loss of lives resulting from the conflict and extended prayers for the recovery of those injured and displaced.
The statement noted that the Iranian president warmly reciprocated the sentiments, expressing goodwill for the people of Pakistan.
In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Shehbaz also extended greetings on Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz to President Pezeshkian and the people of Iran, which were reciprocated during the exchange.
The conversation reflects Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging peaceful resolution as the Middle East faces one of its most volatile periods in recent years.
