WORLD NEWS
U.S. President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday, proclaiming a “golden age of America” as he sought to showcase his administration’s achievements amid declining approval ratings and growing voter frustration ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Speaking to Congress, Trump highlighted economic successes, asserting that he had slowed inflation, boosted the stock market to record highs, enacted sweeping tax cuts, and lowered prescription drug prices. He spent much of the hour-long speech on the economy, presenting a glowing picture despite mixed signals from recent economic data showing higher living costs and slower growth. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, only 36% of Americans approve of his handling of the economy.
Trump opened with a triumphant tone: “Our nation is back — bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before,” eliciting chants of “USA, USA” from Republican lawmakers. Yet, dozens of Democratic seats remained empty as many legislators opted for rallies outside to protest Trump’s policies.
Spotlight on Spectacle and Medals
True to his signature style, Trump incorporated ceremonial flair into the event. He introduced members of the U.S. men’s ice hockey team, fresh from winning Olympic gold, and announced that goalie Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of six medals handed out to various guests. The speech lasted nearly one hour and 47 minutes, breaking the record set last year.
Limited Focus on Foreign Policy
Despite mounting international tensions, Trump largely sidestepped foreign policy. While asserting his preference for diplomacy with Iran, he offered no clear strategy on Tehran amid signs of potential military escalation. He barely mentioned Ukraine, China, or Greenland, and repeated his claim of having “ended” eight wars, a statement widely disputed.
Immigration and Partisan Tensions
Trump’s rhetoric intensified around immigration, claiming undocumented migrants fueled violent crime — assertions contradicted by studies. Heated exchanges occurred on the House floor, with Democrat Ilhan Omar shouting, “You have killed Americans!” over Trump’s aggressive enforcement policies. Representative Al Green was ejected for displaying a sign condemning a social media post from Trump. Other Democrats staged quieter forms of protest, highlighting issues such as healthcare, affordability, and Jeffrey Epstein-related matters.
Political Implications
The address comes as Republicans face the risk of losing control of Congress in November. Democrats, including Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, criticized Trump’s approach, emphasizing the ongoing affordability crisis affecting American families. Analysts note that Trump’s high-energy, combative performance is aimed at consolidating his base ahead of the midterms, yet his approval ratings indicate a divided public response.
With economic, immigration, and international challenges looming, Tuesday’s State of the Union showcased both Trump’s political showmanship and the contentious environment shaping the U.S. ahead of the 2026 elections.
