Clash Erupts Between Police and JI Protesters Outside Sindh Assembly

Tensions flared outside the Sindh Assembly on Saturday as police clashed with Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan (JI) workers staging a protest over what the party described as the Sindh government’s failure to address Karachi’s problems.

Television footage showed protesters running from tear gas while covering their faces. JI had announced a sit-in for February 14 to highlight alleged interference in Karachi’s institutions and governance failures by the provincial government.

Officials Condemn Protest

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the police had been in contact with JI officials since 4pm, allowing them to protest but strictly forbidding entry into the Red Zone.

“They were strictly forbidden from entering the Red Zone, but despite that, JI party workers entered, pelted stones at the police, and tried to enter the assembly,” Memon stated. He added that police were forced to respond with tear gas and arrests.

“No one can take the law into their own hands. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from anyone,” the minister said.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar reinforced this, stating that permission had not been granted to march toward the assembly. “Police were pelted with stones; we were forced to take this step. Nobody is allowed to violate the law,” he said, urging the public to remain peaceful.

JI Responds

In response, JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman accused the Sindh government of “fascism,” posting videos and photos on X showing police action against protesters.

“Using tear gas on peaceful citizens and attempting to stop the sit-in at the Sindh Assembly is proof of the Sindh government’s failure and desperation,” he said.

The incident highlights growing tensions in Karachi between the provincial government and opposition parties, as protests over city governance and administrative control continue.
