PM Shehbaz Directs Mohsin Naqvi to Strengthen Islamabad Security Amid Recent Attacks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to take immediate and effective measures to address the prevailing security situation in Islamabad.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the directive came during a high-level meeting where the interior minister briefed the premier on the overall security landscape of the country. The prime minister was given a detailed overview of the current security arrangements in the federal capital.

The statement said PM Shehbaz instructed Naqvi to handle the security challenges in Islamabad and other related matters “in an effective and efficient manner,” underscoring the government’s resolve to maintain law and order.

Recent Attacks in the Capital

The directive comes in the wake of two major suicide attacks in Islamabad in recent weeks.

On February 6, a suicide bombing at an imambargah during Friday prayers left 36 people dead and more than 150 injured, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the capital in recent years.

Earlier, in November, a suicide blast outside a district and sessions court building in the G-11 area claimed 12 lives and injured over 30 others.

The attacks have raised serious concerns over security preparedness and intelligence coordination in the federal capital.

Diplomatic Engagement with Sri Lanka

The Prime Minister’s Office also announced that Mohsin Naqvi is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka soon, where he will convey a special message from PM Shehbaz to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

High-Level Consultations

The development follows a recent meeting between PM Shehbaz and President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency, where the political and security situation in the country was reviewed.

The meeting was attended by senior cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, along with other key officials.

With rising security challenges, the federal government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring stability and safeguarding citizens in the capital and across the country.
