POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Members of the opposition staged a protest outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday, demanding that cases involving incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan be immediately fixed for hearing and that he be allowed meetings with his family and personal physicians.
Imran, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, is serving a 14-year sentence at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail in the £190 million corruption case. He was also recently convicted in another case related to state gifts.
Health Concerns Intensify
In recent weeks, concerns about Imran’s health have intensified following reports that he is suffering from right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye condition that came to light in late January. His family and party leaders have raised alarm over his medical condition and demanded an independent medical evaluation.
The protest was attended by Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, along with other lawmakers including Amir Dogar, Ali Muhammad Khan, Shahid Khattak, Shafiullah Jan, and Muhammad Hussain. The demonstration concluded around 2pm.
According to a post by the opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP), the participants demanded that a complete medical examination be conducted by Imran’s personal doctors and that his family be granted regular access.
Calls for Confidence-Building Measures
Addressing reporters, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas urged the government to take “confidence-building measures,” including allowing Imran’s relatives and physicians to meet him. He remarked that although the opposition considered the current rulers “Form-47 ones,” any negotiations would still have to be held with them.
Salman Akram Raja expressed distrust in official medical reports, apparently referring to findings submitted to the Supreme Court by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). He said this was not a time for launching movements or holding talks but emphasized concerns raised by Imran’s sister, Uzma Khanum, about his wellbeing.
Raja also noted that opposition leaders were unable to meet Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and said he would seek another opportunity to do so.
“Not just the PTI founder’s eye but his body needs a checkup,” he stated.
Demand for Hospital Transfer
PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan called for Imran to be shifted to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, as requested by his family and personal doctors. He said the former premier was not seeking special treatment but appropriate medical care.
“With so much concern being raised about Imran Khan’s eye issue, especially at the level of the apex court, it is strange that the government has delayed a critical decision of shifting him to a hospital,” he wrote earlier on X.
Shahid Khattak termed the situation an “issue of ego,” while also noting that Imran’s wife, Bushra Bibi, remained incarcerated in what he described as political cases.
Previous Sit-in and SC Intervention
Earlier this month, intervention by the Supreme Court led to PTI lawyer Salman Safdar being allowed to meet Imran. Following the visit, Safdar submitted a report stating that only 15 percent vision remained in Imran’s right eye — a claim that triggered protests from the opposition.
The TTAP had also staged a sit-in outside Parliament House last week to press for medical access and examination of the PTI founder. The protest was called off after five days in deference to the holy month of Ramazan.
With tensions rising and health concerns at the forefront, the opposition has vowed to continue raising the matter before the apex court until their demands are met.
