Karachi – Residents of Karachi are expected to face a major water shortage for 48 hours starting Saturday, as authorities begin essential upgrade work on the city’s main water supply system.
According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, the disruption is due to the final phase of connecting a newly constructed transmission line to the existing network at the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The work is part of a broader initiative to modernize Karachi’s ageing water infrastructure.
The shutdown will begin at noon on April 25 and continue until April 27, during which water supply from key systems will remain suspended. As a result, several areas — including North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, and Gulistan-i-Jauhar — will face complete disruption, while parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Saddar, and Chanesar Town are likely to experience reduced supply.
Officials stated that nine out of 21 pumps at the Dhabeji facility will be temporarily shut down to facilitate the connection. While most pumps are expected to resume operations by April 27, a few will remain offline for additional days to complete technical adjustments.
In addition, major hydrants including Nipa, Safoora, and Sakhi Hasan will remain closed during this period.
Karachi typically receives around 650 million gallons of water per day, but supply is expected to drop significantly to approximately 400 million gallons during the maintenance work.
Authorities have urged residents to store water in advance and use it carefully, assuring that the upgrade will improve water pressure and overall supply efficiency once completed.
